SUMMARY:

Since 2000, there has been a significant growth in studies on intangible heritage. However, few dedicate themselves to observing the procedures of the agencies responsible for carrying out the registrations and the local repercussions. The work proposes to analyze the patrimonialization processes and their impacts through the study of the feast of Santo Antônio, in Barbalha/Ceará. I will observe the tensions and disputes between the revelers, representatives of preservation institutions and the church, the performance of municipal professionals (Secretary of Culture, tourism specialists, etc.) and the presence of popular groups. With the registration of the party in the book of Iphan celebrations, in 2015, a transformation of performances is observed, an increase in bureaucratization and tensions between municipal and state institutions and popular groups. The research was carried out in 2018, 2019, during the preparation of the party and its implementation, and in 2020, 2021 and 2022, with interviews with municipal agents and members of popular groups. The methodological procedures adopted were, above all, ethnography and interviews. It was found during the study that the patrimonialization of the celebration caused the modification of popular traditions, making the feast of Santo Antônio a spectacular event for the region of Cariri. The great repercussion of the party and, consequently, its registration as intangible heritage is linked to the role that popular groups play in this context and how the narrative about the celebration and popular culture was built by elite sectors of the city, which consolidated the party as a a popular/traditional event. We point out that this narrative contributed to the silencing of popular groups about the cultural manifestation of the feast of Santo Antônio, resulting in bureaucratization processes and the difficulty that the holders of the property have in having access to cultural policies. We conclude that the festival's heritage, in many cases, becomes distant from the populations that originated it, resulting in a lack of dialogue between popular groups and preservation institutions.
