SUMMARY:

This thesis seeks to understand the socio-political and cultural process of legitimacy for the biomedical supervision of the gender transition as a matter of public health. The empirical material on which this work is based was built through ethnography whose participant observation included document analysis, longterm interviews, a study of historiographic collections, and specialized medical-psi literature. The mobilization of trans men and other transmasculine subjects was followed, as well as the work of medical doctors and other health professionals and state employees in their institutional and personal context, whether in health services, in spaces of sociality, activism or government to comprehend their performances and experiences. Departing from the metropolitan region corresponding to the city of Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará, we sought to generate a picture of the heterogeneity of the agents involved in the making-up of a health care as a basic instrument for trans citizenship and as a space for scientific activity beneficial to life. Thus, it privileges the description of local interpretations of different social groups, but which come into relationship to establish the relevance of a biologically safe transition. The present text focuses on highlighting the knowledge flows of biochemical sciences, and not only of those named as psi, alongside the changes in the medical approach to transsexualities. Thus, the political strategies that allow trans subjects to claim the need for public coverage of medical care and its appropriation in different terms are described. When concerned with this scenario, it evidences the forms that life politics assume in contemporary times and how they include trans processes of medicalization and production of science that allow the existence and improvement of the self in the face of clinical and surgical interventions, as well as the production of conflicts and contradictions. In this sense, the production of reinterpretations of biomedical knowledge, linked to social mobilization by health services structured by the State, constituted biosocial activism that politicizes bodily changes also at molecular levels. These organic interactions must be controlled by biomedical assistance so that the resulting illnesses are prevented. Thus, we are witnessing new features of trans medicine that are placed differently concerning the first pathological approaches, which form a multifaceted scene of divergent views. This all makes possible the formation of a specific social field to trans health as a matter of politics and science. This is an excerpt of the observed social life, and, as such, we invested in the exhibition of ethnographic experiences that demarcate: body practices, agencies, subjectivation, movements for health rights, biographical trajectories, care, therapeutic itineraries, illness and disease process, professional dynamics, discourses around identity, scientific production of knowledge, biomedical interventions and the formation of the Brazilian State-nation through the sociological circumscription of the Transexualizador Process in its Unified Health System
