RESUMO:

The sea is the scene of one of the most complex relations of society-nature: the possible
encounter through the technical mediation fishing between men and marine beings. Unlike the
naturalist ontology - where society and nature form opposing groups - of which we
Westerners are heirs, the sea is the space where men, technical artifacts, and animals fully
form a collective. From the bibliographical research and the empirical experience of the
author on fishing collectives, it was observed in the universe of the fishing potiguar the
existence of the game metaphor native, whose content expresses the encounter between men
and marine beings in the struggle for the daily survival. This category expresses a system of
human-animal-technical relations, operationalized by two conditions that, ethnographically,
we call expertise-technical and moral-technical. Both categories are our conceptual
experiments, constructed from the interlocution with the fishermen who interlocutor of the
research. The first concerns the field of fishing techniques as a whole - a translation of the
extensive repertoire of knowledge built on the sea, transmitted through orality and, above all,
the education of bodies. The second concerns the rule for predation, is the use of techniques
that do not totally eliminate the chances of "victory" of the fish, that is, their escape. In this
way, Playing with the fish expresses the subjectivation of the marines beings, the recognition
of their capacity of action and the rupture with the suject-object opposition. Knowing to play,
in emic terms, means to operationalize the two notions mentioned above, which gives the
fisherman social prestige in his grouping. However, relations with the sea and non-humans are
different between small-scale fishermen and fishermen employed in industrial companies.
Such a distinction is constantly reinforced in the discourses of fishworkers, among them
artisanal fishermen in the municipality of Caiçara do Norte (located on the northern coast of
the State of Rio Grande do Norte) and the fishermen employed in Natal (capital of the same
State) . In general, artisanal fishermen claim that salaried / boarded fishermen do not play
with fish. Therefore, the objective of this study is to start from the notion of game and to
unfold it to understand more general aspects of the relationship between humans, things and
animals in the artisanal and industrial segment of the potiguar fishing. To this end, we have
invested in the technical processes of both segments as a research method and in a
multispecies ethnographic approach to understanding coexistence and cooperation between
men and marine beings.
