SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the written production of Ademar Vidal on the sertão and sertanejo categories, between 1940 and 1950 and a consequent sertanejo identity in the production of the intellectual Ademar Vidal, between the years 1940 and 1950.We listed as a starting point for understanding their production the intellectual activities of Paraiba, mainly linked to institutions dedicated to cultural and literary productions about Paraiba identity, such as the Paraiba Society of Folklore (SPF) and the Historical Geographic Institute of Paraiba (IHGP), in the 1940s. These performances in the intellectual and cultural scenario were important in the formulation of a discourse on characterizations of the people and the sertanejo space, listed in his work as composer elements of a Paraiba identity, formulated from social and cultural practices, experienced in three spatialities: coast, marsh or floodplain and sertão. In this way, understanding Vidal's conceptions about the sertão allows us to identify the definitions of this category in the intellectual scene in the 1940s and 1950s, as a result of the constant Vidal publications on the subject in journals and books. Thus, the time frame is linked to Vidalian productions published in these decades and, mainly, cultural research carried out by collaborators from the countryside of Paraíba, which were used as sources in the production of his work. Furthermore, some of his unpublished books, although not dated, are linked to these discussions. We use the aforementioned productions as sources, we also highlight the unpublished works available at the IHGP, bibliography and correspondence sent to Luís da Câmara Cascudo, made available at Instituto Câmara Cascudo, (Ludovicus), from which we were able to map the studies and productions carried out about the hinterland paraibano.
