SUMMARY:
The Wingless (Wnt) / β-catenin signaling pathway is essential for the early activation of odontogenesis and in the development of odontogenic tumors, in addition this pathway is responsible for the expression of high molecular weight cytokeratins, such as CK14 and CK19. TGF-ß and BMPs have been associated with reactionary and restorative dentinogenesis processes. This growth factor is released by odontoblasts and fibroblasts and is stored inside the dentinal tubules. In vitro experiments and genetic studies in knockout animals have shown that TGF-ß1 is an important factor involved in dental repair events. The development of the tooth depends on a series of reciprocal signaling interactions between the oral epithelium (EO) and the mesenchyme derived from the neural crest, the WNT pathway with TGF-ß and BMP4 has been implicated in the formation of supernumerary teeth during odontogenesis. Therefore, the objective of our work will be to investigate the role of this pathway in the formation of odontomas and supernumerary teeth and, for this, a sectional retrospective and immunohistochemical study will be developed for a sample of 20 compound odontomas, 20 complex odontomas, 20 supernumerary teeth and 20 postnatal teeth to study the WNT / ß-catenin pathway and the TGF-ß1 family.
