SUMMARY:

The use of lignocellulosic biomass as raw material for products mitigates the consumption of fossil resources and, therefore, alleviates damage to the environment. Cellulose-based products are widely consumed by the population from packaging, and fuel to energy storage devices, while industrial solvents such as furfural are obtained from hemicellulose. Although still limited, there is much room for growth in lignin-based products. Today, lignin has been well applied to obtain heat and electricity in pulp and paper mills. However, it is estimated that the energy coming from 15%-30% of Kraft lignin, the main technical lignin is enough to maintain the functioning of the pulp and paper industrial plants, so there is a surplus of the polymer for more noble purposes. The same behavior will occur when cellulosic ethanol biorefineries are consolidated. In this sense, this work will seek to add value to lignin, particularly as a stabilizer. The study will investigate the performance of lignin nanoparticles as stabilizers of Pickering oil-water emulsions. The cob lignin will be selected for the tests and it will be obtained via alkaline extraction. Chemical oxidation and acetylation reactions will be proposed to improve the emulsifying properties of lignin. Emulsification index and droplet size will be evaluated in toluene/water, n-octanol/water, and corn oil/water systems under different concentrations of nanoparticles. In addition, the template of Pickering emulsions with lignin nanoparticles will be used to prepare preformed polymer hollow microcapsules, ascertaining which nanoparticle samples will be appropriate.
