SUMMARY:

Due to the growing need to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, biodiesel has emerged as one of the most used biofuels in the world, with Brazil being one of the largest producers. In Brazil, a transesterification of soybean oil using catalysts has been the most widely used methodology for generation of this biofuel. Although it is more traditional, this method produces a large quantity of effluents in the processes of removing the unwanted byproduct, glycerin, and the remaining catalyst. Besides, the high price of soy oil makes it necessary to diversify the raw materials. Within this context, the paper proposes using of interesterification reaction, under supercritical conditions, with corn oil as a raw material for biodiesel production. In interesterification using methyl acetate, the by-product formed (triacetin) acts as a kind of additive to biodiesel and, therefore, does not need to be removed at the end. Furthermore, in supercritical conditions the addition of catalysts is not necessary, so the purification of biodiesel is much simpler. Corn oil is already a raw material used in biodiesel production in Brazil and is also easy to produce and find. The experiments will be performed in a continuous reactor following an experimental design, in order to evaluate the main variables of the process (temperature, reaction time, pressure and molar ratio). The final product will be evaluated through gas chromatography and physicochemical analysis to determine if it complies with the industry's quality standards.
