SUMMARY:

In the last few years, the demand for renewable energy sources has increased, in view of the need to reduce the pollution generated to the environment when using fossil fuels. Biodiesel stands out among these new energy sources due to its great variety in the raw materials that can be used in its production and also because of its biodegradability. The sesame seed presents in its composition a high oil content. Initially used in the food industry, the oleaginous seed shows potential as a natural source for biodiesel production, and this process has received substantial incentive through tax benefits on the purchase of biofuel from this plant. The supercritical transesterification of sesame oil emerges as an alternative to the most common method of biodiesel production (catalytic transesterification) because there is no need to use a catalyst in the reaction, which leads to a simplification of the process. To carry out this process it is necessary to analyze the physical-chemical properties of the oil, such as its free fatty acid content, its acidity index, its viscosity, density and humidity. The use of a continuous-flow reactor aims to bring the experiments closer to the reality of industrial-scale production, in addition to the advantages of being able to change certain operating conditions of the process (temperature, pressure, and initial flow rate) in progress, as well as the economy of raw materials and reagents when compared to the batch process. An analysis of the process yield, as well as of the physical-chemical characteristics of the final product is of vital importance to know if the biofuel meets the standards established for its trade.
