SUMMARY:

The conversion of lignocellulosic materials into fermentable sugars for ethanol production has been a promising alternative for increasing biofuel production. However, the approach focused only on ethanol production is not economically viable and sustainable, since important sub-products are discarded as the lignin. Composites of lignin and magnetite has been efficiently developed for multi-application, achieving satisfactory results. Therefore, the present work has the main objective of synthetize nanocomposites based on lignin from corn cobs for adsorption of copper ions and as bioactive carrier (drug delivery). The corn cob biomass will be pretreated by organosolv with glycerol, oxidation with persulfate and the combination of both (previous oxidation, later oxidation and simultaneous oxidation to organosolv pretreatment). As result a sugar concentrated biomass and a liquor with lignin will be obtained. The pretreated biomasses will be characterized in order to evaluate the potential for fermentation. The lignin in liquor will be isolated and it will be used for synthetize a lignin and magnetite nanocomposite in batch experiments. The lignin will be characterized in terms of chemical composition, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, thermal degradation, UV spectrum, magnetic resonance spectroscopy and solubility in organic solvent. The nanocomposites will be characterized for zeta potential and hydrodynamic size, as well as scanning electron microscopy to visualize the structure formed. Then, the nanocomposite of lignin and magnetite will be applied for copper ions adsorption in synthetic effluent. In the second stage of this work, the previous obtained lignin will be insert into an atomization reactor in order to produce uniform nanoparticles of lignin. At this stage, a higher range of experimental conditions will be evaluated to reach the best strategy of synthesis. After identifying the desired strategy, a bioactive will be incorporated into the nanoparticles’ formation process. The formation efficiency of the lignin and bioactive nanoparticles will be evaluated. The last addition into the synthesis procedure will be the magnetite. The nanocomposites produced in the atomization reactor will be characterized as the produced in bath experiments.
