RESUMO:

The current demand for water supply faces the diminishing availability of water resources that can be used on a daily basis. On that subject, sewage treatment is an indispensable task, since it enables the reuse of water for various purposes, in addition to avoiding possible contamination of the environment and the population. Since domestic wastewater is composed mainly of organic matter, the present work proposes the use of heterogeneous photocatalysis for the degradation of these substances. Given the complex nature of raw sewage, a synthetic sewage solution will be prepared at first, which will be fed to a batch photocatalytic reactor, under constant agitation and exposure to sunlight, in order to define the best operating conditions (pH, reaction time, substrate concentration, and photocatalyst efficiency). TiO2, WO3 and Nb2O5 will be tested to define the most appropriate catalyst for the occurrence of the reactionThe aliquots collected throughout the tests will be centrifuged and analyzed based on their biochemical oxygen demand. After that, an artificial lighting system will be coupled to the reactor, hence allowing the occurrence of the reaction even on days with lower solar incidence. After these changes, samples from the Sewage Treatment Station at UFRN will be fed to the reactor for further testing.
