RESUMO:

Brazil is a typically agroindustrial country and, for this reason, generates many agro-industrial by-products and wastes on a daily basis, such as the green coconut shell, the corn cob and the cashew peduncle. Reusing and adding value to these wastes is of great economic and environmental interest, since they are renewable materials, do not demand new areas (lands) destined to the food production and allows the reduction of their disposal, which often occurs in an inappropriate way. The use of lignocellulosic materials in ethanol production requires pretreatment of biomass to promote the accessibility of enzymes that hydrolyse cellulose and provide glucose for subsequent fermentation. Pretreatment should meet less severe conditions such as low pressure and temperature. The same is a high cost and therefore must be optimized. Thus, several authors have studied the influence of surfactants on pretreatment and have found an improvement in surfactants, resulting in higher fermentable sugars yields during enzymatic saccharification. In the step of enzymatic hydrolysis, difficulties are also found, mainly the high cost of the enzymes added to the high enzymatic charges necessary to obtain satisfactory conversions in fermentable sugars. In this context, other studies have reported that the addition of nonionic surfactants during enzymatic hydrolysis reduces the non-productive adsorption of enzymes on the substrates, indicating that lower enzymatic charges are required to achieve similar conversions in sugar monomers. The use of surfactants in the fermentation stage is a recent, little explored and, as already reported in the literature, allowed Saccharomyces cerevisiae to present greater vitality and tolerance to the inhibitory compounds, improving the production of ethanol. This is of great interest, since detoxification for inhibitor withdrawal and the genetic modification of microorganisms may become unnecessary in the industrial process, making it economically easier to deploy the cellulosic ethanol industry. Therefore, the present project proposes to study the use of surfactants in the pretreatment, in the enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation of agroindustrial residues (green coconut shell, corn cob and cashew peduncle fiber) in order to separately evaluate their influence in each step of production. In addition, it is intended to integrate these steps through the use of surfactants, aiming at reducing water consumption and biomass conditioning between these stages as well as improving the mass yield of ethanol produced.
