RESUMO:

Among the main sources of environmental pollution currently present, the textile industry stands out for the generation of high volumes of effluents containing synthetic dyes in high concentration. Dyes are substances that are highly detectable to the human eye and because they are toxic at a certain concentration, their uncontrolled release into the environment can endanger the health of the population. In this context, Advanced Oxidative Processes (AOPs), such as heterogeneous photocatalysis and heterogeneous photo-Fenton, have been shown to be a promising alternative for the treatment of these effluents, since they comprise a set of efficient technologies for the removal of recalcitrant organic compounds present in solution. During treatment the pollutants are destroyed and not only transferred from one phase to another. The hematite (a-Fe2O3) is one of the iron oxides most commonly used in heterogeneous catalysis for the oxidation of organic pollutants. However, it is characterized by not exhibiting excellent photocatalytic activity, although it is activated by sunlight. One way to overcome this problem is to combine it with another semiconductor, such as niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5), for example. Numerous applications have shown that the presence of niobium generally increases the catalytic activity and stability of iron oxide-based catalysts, as well as adding interesting features. Thus, the aim of this work is to synthesize and characterize a-Fe2O3/Nb2O5 mixed oxides obtained from different mass proportions of a-Fe2O3 and Nb2O5 and calcination temperatures. In addition, the efficiency of these catalysts in the degradation of the methylene blue dye will be evaluated by two types of POAs: heterogeneous solar photocatalysis and heterogeneous solar photo-Fenton.
