SUMMARY:

Museums are institutions that were created to acquire, conserve, investigate, disseminate and exhibit the material testimonies of humanity and its surroundings, to promote education, citizenship, culture, enjoyment and quality of life in society. Even holding works of cultural and material value, having employees and receiving a diverse visiting population, many museums lack, or partially have, accessibility and disaster prevention and response systems, in particular, an emergency evacuation system. This research project aims to analyze the conditions of accessibility and emergency evacuation of museums in Natal city, Rio Grande do Norte, and the preparation of the user population (employees, managers and visitors) for the safe evacuation of the museum in an emergency context. As specific objectives, it is intended to: identify the risks of accidents/disasters, which may cause the evacuation of the user population in an emergency; identify physical and informational barriers that hinder the safe evacuation of this population in an emergency context; analyze the risk perception of this population; and to analyze the preparation that this population has to carry out the evacuation of the museum, in a safe way, in an emergency situation. As for its nature, it is an applied research. As for the approach, it is classified as qualitative and quantitative. As for the objectives, it is classified as descriptive. As for the procedure, it is classified as a case study. The population studied in this research will comprise the employees and visitors of the museums in question. Initially, a bibliographical research will be carried out on the subject of this research in the Periódicos Capes virtual library and documentary research on norms and legislation on accessibility and evacuation and emergency systems. Then, using the Script for the Global Analysis of Museums, a survey and general characterization of the existing museums in the city of Natal will be carried out, in which a standard checklist will be applied to assess the conformity of accessibility and of the systems or devices of emergency and evacuation of each museum to the user population. Then, based on the Ergonomic Work Analysis (EWA), a case study will be carried out in one of the mentioned museums, which will be chosen according to the largest number of visitors and/or the number or degree of nonconformities and the authorization of the respective manager. In the case study, the Global Analysis Script of the Case Study Museum will be applied, to learn about its structure, organization and global functioning, the Visitation Observation Plan, to identify accessibility problems, and the Conversation Script with employees, managers and visitors to the museum to analyze their perception of accessibility, risks, emergency and evacuation. Also, a simulated exercise will be carried out, with an emergency scenario inducing the evacuation of the user population from the museum, to analyze their behavior in the face of the simulated emergency situation. To assess the perception of risk and of the museum's accessibility, emergency and evacuation systems by the user population, a questionnaire will be applied immediately before and after the simulated exercise. Lastly, immediately after the simulated exercise, the Conversation Script (focal group; debriefing) will be applied with the user population that participated in the simulated to comment on the emergency scenario applied and the accessibility, emergency and evacuation systems of the museum and its relations with the behaviors assumed by them before this simulated scenario. This research is expected to contribute to the theoretical and methodological knowledge of Ergonomics and Risk Management of Accidents or Disasters and, from a practical point of view, to the improvement of public policies, management and museum projects, with regard to safety of its user population in emergency situations.
