SUMMARY:

The problems caused by the inefficient management of solid waste are considered as one of the biggest challenges related to urban sustainability and the municipalities directly suffer the negative socio-environmental impacts associated with inadequate practices, even after the advent of the National Policy for Solid Waste (PNRS) in Brazil. This research is very important because it identifies the main weaknesses of waste pickers' organizations and suggests improvements to their functioning and in the management of solid waste as a whole, and may present guidelines and strategies for better functioning and achieving better results aiming at sustainability of these organizations. The general objective is to evaluate the management of recyclable solid waste, through the use of indicators and the application of a sustainability indice, in cities located in the Seridó of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. It is expected to contribute to the improvement of waste pickers' organizations and municipal management, within the scope of solid waste, through the application of sustainability indicators and indices, in order to enable decisions and action planning as well as the application of budgetary resources occurs more assertively in order to advance the execution of the National Solid Waste Policy.
