SUMMARY:

This research is part of the theme of sustainable development in organizations and focuses on how Brazilian public higher education institutions should collaborate with the implementation and dissemination of the guidelines proposed with the 2030 Agenda. According to a premise defended by the United Nations Organizations (UN), universities are important actors for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched in 2015, and it is pointed out that without the actions of these institutions it is not possible to achieve what advocates sustainable development. In the light of this context, this study has as general objective to investigate how public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Brazil are incorporating the SDGs, considering a reflection on the awareness of the role played by these institutions, the alignment of their actions and the dissemination of the guidelines of the 2030 Agenda to the academic community and society. The study is anchored in a theoretical perspective that emphasizes the role of universities in promoting sustainable development, having conducted a literature review that pointed out the main historical milestones of the evolution of this theme in the scope of educational institutions. Also, a systematic review identified 45 articles produced around the world that emphasize experiences of implementing the SDDs in various higher education institutions, allowing to generate a reflection on the main paths and challenges that present themselves to the HEIs that seek to align themselves with the SDDS. To know the reality of Brazilian HEIs in this theme and adopting an exploratory approach, this research includes the application of a questionnaire with 352 higher education institutions in Brazil, seeking to identify how these institutions have been dialoguing with the 2030 Agenda and the SDDs in the dimensions of management, teaching, research, and extension. A data collection with students and teachers will complement this analysis, allowing to capture the perception of this public about the SDDs and the role played by their institution in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. As a general result of the study, there is the production of a Brazilian panorama that identifies the situation of public HEIs in the face of the incorporation of the SDDS, as well as the systematization of a set of successful initiatives that allow the elaboration of a practical guide guiding ways for higher education institutions to fulfill their role as implementers of the Sustainable Development Goals.
