SUMMARY:

Wind energy is a renewable, abundant, safe and clean energy resource used to generate electricity, unaffected by fossil fuel costs and long-term price fluctuations. Studies point to an expansion of the offshore wind energy industry in the coming decades, in a context of a challenging combination between global energy demand growth and society's concerns about the environment and sustainable development. According to projections by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global offshore installed capacity will grow from 24 GW in 2018 to 228 GW in 2030 and to approximately 1000 GW in 2050, when then offshore wind farms will account for 17% of installed wind capacity and 5% of the global installed capacity, of approximately 20,000 GW. Such projections point out that the offshore wind energy industry will become a US$ 1 trillion business starting in the 2040s. Currently, in Brazil, all generation of electricity from the wind source comes from onshore plants, with no offshore plants in operation yet. However, in the maritime environment, the country has an extensive coastline with vast untapped wind potential, which would be sufficient to supply the country's energy demand in the long term. In this sense, a case study will be conducted for the installation of an offshore wind farm of 1 GW, close to the coast of Rio Grande do Norte State. The study has the following objectives: (i) to perform a literature review to characterize the main components and the life cycle of an offshore electric power generation system; (ii) to investigate the offshore wind potential on a global and national scale; (iii) to statistically characterize the wind resource at the selected location; (iv) to estimate the plant´s energy productivity and supply capacity; (iv) to estimate costs incurred over the plant's life cycle (CAPEX, OPEX and DECEX), as well as the levelized cost of the produced energy; (v) to perform a preliminary financial analysis of the enterprise, using economic viability indicators.
