RESUMO:
Although medical equipment maintenance has been well planned and implemented for more than 30 years, few studies have been conducted to measure and evaluate their effectiveness in terms of reliability and severity of failures. The lack of empirical evidence limits the ability of clinical engineering (CE) professionals to review maintenance strategy and improve the effectiveness of their work, as well as focus on the equipment and tasks that could provide the greatest return to their limited resources. Using a small set of failure codes, the data were collected in 11 hospitals of the municipal health public network for a period of 12 months, covering more than 1,000 equipment. The careful analysis of collected work orders showed that the flaws encountered for each type of equipment within a single hospital tend to converge to a stable standard. In addition, failure patterns obtained from different hospitals for the same type of equipment appear to be within the statistical range of each other, although these hospitals may use different brands and equipment models, as well as obvious differences in user care and training, intensity and other environmental factors. The collected failure data was used to determine the likelihood of failure as well as to determine additional opportunities for EC professionals to contribute and increase patient safety in addition to increasing equipment reliability through maintenance.
