RESUMO:

Due to the great drought faced by Brazil in the early 2000s and consequent water shortage, the country had to fight against a critical energy scenario. With its economy weakened by the energy crisis, the need for a search for new sources of energy, especially those that did not depend on the rains, became evident. The Program of Incentive for Alternative Energy Sources (PROINFA¹) was created in mid-2002, bringing significant investments in alternative sources of energy - especially renewable ones - aiming to diversify the Brazilian most  common sources of power/power generation and, at the same time, contribute to reducing the effects of global warming. In view of its abundant natural resources, the use of Brazilian wind potential grows rapidly. It was observed that a large part of manufacturers of wind turbines and other components of the wind farms installed in Brazil comes from countries with a different climate condition and an already mature wind use culture (which goes from component manufacturing and/or power generation to operation and/or maintenance). Official data show there are currently 535 wind farms installed throughout Brazil, having most of which been in operation since 2010; and national press news indicate that failures in wind farms have occurred, reducing the availability of wind generated power. This dissertation aims to propose guidelines and best practices for wind farms operation and maintenance - O&M - management in Brazil. The research method can be characterized as predominantly exploratory research - of applied nature and inductive character - with predominantly qualitative approach. Field research will include case studies and interviews with O&M managers from different wind farms. The research procedure involves three stages: In the first one, a traditional literature review will be carried out on the structure of a wind farm, as well as on its operation and O&M management, considering maintenance types, characteristics and applications, as well as maintenance management strategies and tools to aid analysis of failures and decision-making; and a systematic literature review on the operation and maintenance of wind farms in Brazil and worldwide. The second stage will consist of case studies in different wind farms installed in the country, as well as the processing and analysis of the data collected. The third step will consist of analyzing the previously processed data by using analysis aid tools. As a result of the dissertation, there is a proposal of guidelines and best practices for wind farms O&M in Brazil.
