RESUMO:

It is really important that children in elementary schools (initial years - 1st to 5th year) receive preparatory actions to face the risks and disasters, since many of these schools are located in risk areas that concentrate a lot of people more vulnerable to disasters, especially children under the age of fifteen.  Schools of basic education, as they are also called, can play a crucial facilitating role in developing and enhancing perceptions of risks in children, and in promoting training that fosters the development of safe and resilient attitudes and skills in a fighting with possible risks and disasters. Brazil is the country of Latin America that has the largest contingent of children and adolescents. Although there are several factors that determine children's perception of risk, the fact is that the younger and more immature they are, the less risk they perceive, the greater the vulnerability to risks and disasters, and the greater the dependence on others.  However, children are able to express their opinions freely and to participate in all matters that affect their lives. In view of this, this research project has as general objective to analyze the relationship between the preparation, through experiences (workshop or simulation), the development of the development of the perception of disaster risk and the adoption of behavior, attitudes and safety skills of children of Elementary School  when they need to face a risk of disaster. Quantitative methods (survey) and qualitative methods (focal group and case study) will be used. The research will be carried out in schools of the municipal and state public school of Elementary School of the city of Natal/RN, in three main stages. The first stage will consist of the accomplishment of Focus Groups (FGs) with students of the 5th grade of Elementary School of a state public school located in the neighborhood of Mãe Luíza, Natal/RN, in order to refine the questionnaire of the survey that will be carried out in the second stage of the research. FGs will consist between five to seven students who will meet in a location to be defined for about forty to sixty minutes, where they will be encouraged to express their perceptions of disaster risks and preparedness for coping with hazards and disasters. These meetings will be recorded for later, the data and information recorded will be treated and analyzed, through the application of the Thematic Analysis technique. This technique consists in the identification of themes, from the statements of students' speeches, such as: cognition (perception of risks), knowledge (understanding, living, education, risk communication and preparation), emotion/feeling (strategy) and behavior. The second step will be conduct a survey. In this stage, a questionnaire will be applied to investigate and analyze the factors related to the perception of risk and the preparation of the students of the 5th year of municipal public schools of Elementary School, located in the Eastern, West, North and South zones of the city of Natal, RN.  The technique used to select the schools will be the stratified sampling, due to the social, economic and cultural differences between the four zones, as well as the number of students present and the amounts of the risk areas and their different degrees of risk. The third step will be conducting a case study at the school where the FGs will take place. Students, teachers and other employees of this school will receive, in advance, general information and guidelines on a possible simulated exercise of evacuation of the school, based on a critical postulated event, to be held at a future date and in an undefined shift to ensure the greatest realism possible. The simulated exercise will be observed by a group of observers and an evaluation instrument will be applied, in which issues related to risk and disaster management, related to the perception of risks, the use of technologies, the behaviors adopted and the individual/public skills (cooperation, coordination) carried out during the evacuation of the risk area.  After this exercise, a debriefing will be conducted with the participants to evaluate the simulated exercise performed and to self-assess. The purpose is to discuss the positive points that need to be maintained and strengthened, and the negative ones that need to be eliminated or improved, to exchange experiences, to improve risk perception and evacuation preparation of the risk area. It is expected, with this research: to identify the main aspects of the situation, that propitiate and make difficult the perception of the risks of disasters of the Elementary School; identify and analyze the various strategies related with risk and disaster, both individually and collectively; identify and analyze the forms of cooperation and coordination practiced; identify and analyze the use of technologies; develop guidelines for the safe and resilient evacuation of children from schools at risk of disaster; formalize a simulated exercise model for the evacuation of children from schools at risk, in order to improve the perception of risk and skills in coping with this type of situation.
