RESUMO:

Construction is one of the oldest activities ever developed by man. At present, it can be considered as one of the most important industries, which is justified by its ability to absorb labor from both the upper and lower classes of society, as well as from highly qualified ones, by their influence across the economic spectrum, also, for its capacity to act in the organization and functioning of physical spaces, through interventions with great power of transformation. Despite its importance, this industry assumes the responsibility of being one of the most impactful to the environment, as a global phenomenon. At a time when modern world society seeks to protect and preserve the environment through the consolidation of new paradigms founded on the conservation of natural capital and aiming at what is defined as sustainable development, and therefore sustainability itself, the adhesion of the construction industry to this idea - that is, to promote development within a new paradigm of production, with the consequence of transforming conventional construction into sustainable construction, is of great significance. In Brazil, where the State has the role of inducer of public policies with a strong influence on the whole society, it is observed the relevance of its adherence to this new concept of sustainable construction, be it through example - through the adoption of constructive practices Focused on sustainability in the execution of their works, either by means of the definition of regulations and the elaboration of own norms and adapted to the conversion in this new vision through the application of environmental requirements. The objective of the present work is to identify the application of environmental requirements in public construction works, as well as the proposal of guidelines for this application, which will guide such implementation aimed at achieving sustainability, having as a field of study the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), an institution of higher education in the Brazilian Northeast, very academically renowned and that has undergone a great transformation in its physical space, due to the accomplishment of a significant set of works in recent years.
