SUMMARY:

Palliative care is a field of knowledge and approach that seeks to improve the quality of life of a person with a life-threatening illness. Care begins with the diagnosis of the disease and continues regardless of the success of curative treatment. It is estimated that more than 56.8 million people in the world need palliative care every year, and of these, 7% are children. Despite being an old practice, it is a challenge experienced all over the world, especially in neonatology. Some barriers hinder its evolution in health services, such as lack of access to opioids for pain control, effective health policies and lack of qualified professionals for this knowledge and purpose. The nurse works in the elaboration, execution and evaluation of health care plans. In the field of neonatology, it is important that the application of invasive or ineffective procedures is reduced, minimal manipulation must be used in the necessary monitoring of the newborn and all actions must be shared with the family, seeking to minimize the "total pain" either physical, mental or spiritual, including it in the decision making with the team and guaranteeing assistance during all the necessary time, inclusive, in the period of mourning. Palliative care is part of the human rights policy that has the right to health, privacy, the right not to be subjected to inhuman or degrading treatment and the right to information. In this study, we aim to analyze nursing care in palliative care in a neonatal intensive care unit. We will carry out an exploratory-descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The instrument for collecting information used will be the semi-structured interview and the analysis will be carried out in the light of the methodological framework of thematic analysis, which comprises the phases of pre-analysis, coding and treatment of the results. The expected results aim to contribute to the professional development of nursing in the use of palliative care in the neonatal intensive care unit, through the proposition of a practical guide on the subject. Palliative care in neonatology is already a global need, in this sense, nursing can use the approach and promising resources to carry out good palliative care practices.
