BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde

SUMMARY:

Introduction: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) consists of the insertion of sterile dialyzer fluid, containing glucose and electrolytes, into the peritoneal cavity through a flexible catheter (Tenckhoff catheter). The peritoneum has a filter-like function, allowing the exchange of solutes. Although it is considered a very effective treatment, Peritoneal Dialysis is still underused in Brazil. Among the various factors that contribute to the low use of PD, there is the lack of training and inexperience of the health professionals responsible for the care of this patient. Objective: To develop a Standard Operating Protocol (SOP), aimed at nurses, to standardize and improve care for pediatric patients on peritoneal dialysis. Method: This is an action research study, to be carried out with nurses who work in the Pediatric Unit of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital (HUOL), and which will consist of four stages, aiming at the production of a standard and operational protocol. training of the nursing team for its use. As this is a research involving human beings and in compliance with Resolution No. 466/12, this project will be forwarded to the Teaching and Research Management of HUOL in order to obtain authorization to carry out the study in the pediatric unit of the respective hospital, be forwarded immediately to the Ethics and Research Committee of HUOL/UFRN. Expected results: With this study, we seek to improve the knowledge of nursing professionals about the care to be provided to children and adolescents undergoing peritoneal dialysis treatment, in addition to standardizing the procedure for performing peritoneal dialysis. It is expected that there will be a significant reduction in complications and harm to patients related to the procedure
