SUMMARY:

Evaluation of the improvement of the quality of health services, display or use of indicators, among them, the quality and resolution used in the operating room, such as cancellation rates of surgical procedures. Define surgical cancellation as an operation that has been scheduled but not performed for any reason and may be related to medical causes, hospitals, or individual patients. Cancellations cause damage to the patient, interfering with the outcome of care, as well as the institution, increasing hospital costs. In case of treatment of cancer patient, as the consequences are even more severe, since early surgical intervention directly affects prognosis, improving survival and reducing morbidity and mortality. Thus, an analysis of surgical suspension rates in a health unit with improvement of the quality of care and efficiency of the service offered to the user population of the SUS (Unified Health System), as well as the rationalization of financial and human resources. As surgical suspensions should be avoided, a pre-anesthetic consultation and telephone comparison of patients days before the procedure configure the analyzes that can be adopted to change or cancel their cancellation. This is a descriptive observational study with quantitative approach on the impact of prior telephone confirmation on reducing cancellation of absentee surgery. The research was approved by the Ethics and Research Committee of the Federal University of Alagoas / UFAL, and was carried out at Professor Alberto Antunes University Hospital (HUPAA / UFAL), in the city of Maceió, Alagoas. The population consisted of 444 patients, with cancer surgery scheduled for the period between January and June 2019, totaling a sample of 205 patients who agreed to participate in the study. Patient data and respective surgeries were collected through the surgical map, available in the SOUL MV Hospital System. By telephone contact made 48 hours before surgery, the user was asked about exams, fasting, use of medications, orthoses / prostheses and confirmation of their presence in the surgical procedure. Data were analyzed descriptively. Patient non-attendance after telephone intervention is the fourth cause of surgical cancellation, reaching a lower value in the last three years. In 2017, absenteeism decreased from 16% to 8%, after telephone contact. The effectiveness of prior telephone confirmation was found to reduce cancellation of elective oncologic surgeries due to patient absenteeism, given the 50% reduction in cancellations related to this cause. Thus, the implementation of a call center to confirm the presence of the user would be a strategy with great impact in reducing surgical cancellation
