RESUMO:

Blood transfusion is an indispensable procedure in several clinical situations. However, this procedure involves numerous risks, which can be minimized through activities to maintain process quality. It is necessary to establish well-defined flows against the nonconformities identified during the development of activities in the service. In this way, the objective is to propose a new protocol for quality improvement with a focus on the correction of nonconformities and rational use of blood components. A research was done at the Transfusional-AT Branch of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Pernambuco-UFPE, and to identify the nonconformities the work process was mapped and later described the indicators "Response time", "Conformity of blood transfusion requests", "Frequency of missing data in requests" and "Number of red cell concentrate reserves for surgeries". From this evaluation, the large number of nonconformities regarding the transfusion requests and the high number of packed red blood cells that were returned to the stock were identified. These problems hinder quality management and the rational use of blood components. Therefore, the present work proposes improvements in the work processes, with the conformity of requests for blood transfusion and rational use of blood components using a new protocol for the reservation of blood components for surgeries.
