SUMMARY:

Continuing Health Education (EPS) is essential for health care to remain up to date with advances in science and technology. Although digital technologies provide access to different content related to this care, they are often unstructured and segregated in different information systems. This may compromise the continuous updating of health care to keep up with scientific and technological developments. Furthermore, healthcare professionals generally have little time to dedicate to training or training programs outside of the work environment. These capabilities are not always directly related to specific demands in real cases. Microlearning is a pedagogical approach that could be explored at EPS, as it allows it to be kept up to date efficiently. Therefore, this research aims to (1) identify opportunities for improvement in the continuing education of health professionals associated with the daily care of patients; to then (2) propose a digital educational technology suitable for updating these professionals in this context. To this end, the following specific objectives were established: (1) Understand the current process of continuing education of health professionals, including their motivations, the search for relevant content and the study of the content found; (2) Identify opportunities for improvement in this process; (3) Design an educational technology that can contribute to improving the Continuing Health Education of these health professionals; (4) Evaluate the digital educational technology designed with professionals. The theoretical foundation used covered: Continuing Health Education; Information and Communications Technologies and Distance Education at EPS; Digital educational resources at EPS; Meaningful Learning; and Microlearning. In related work, the topics covered involved microlearning applications in digital systems, in other areas and in health. To achieve the research objectives, the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology will be used, which will be conducted in 6 stages. Step 1: Problem Identification and Motivation, with questionnaires and interviews. Step 2: Defining Objectives for the Solution. Step 3: Design and Development, following the interaction design approach with requirements definition and solution alternative design activities. Stage 4: Demonstration, with the creation of an interactive prototype of the educational technology for subsequent evaluation with the participation of health professionals. Step 5: Evaluation with observation of the prototype's use, to identify problems in the prototype's interface. Stage 6: Communication, with the dissemination of results in the dissertation and in the prototype documentation, as a technical product. The following results are expected to be achieved at the end of the work: (1) Specification of requirements for an educational technology with microlearning for continuing education of health professionals who work in primary care; (2) Design of a digital educational technology that meets such requirements; (3) Interactive prototype of this educational technology; and (4) Evaluation results of this prototype.
