SUMMARY:

The development of socio-emotional skills is necessary to ensure the holistic education of individuals, providing a foundation for cultivating critical and reflective citizens. Taking this need into consideration, the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) in its introduction states its commitment to integral education, which takes into account the students' development in all dimensions. Thus, the document ensures the consideration of both intellectual and affective aspects, establishing guidelines for the school practice of K-12 Education (BRASIL, 2018). In this sense, the STEAM approach, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, proposes an interdisciplinary work among these areas of knowledge. Furthermore, this approach encourages students to find solutions to real-world problems, fostering autonomy in constructing their knowledge and developing scientific thinking. In this process, mediated by the teacher, students can also develop 21st-century skills. Individuals with high abilities may face difficulties in developing socio-emotional skills, leading to a potential gap between gifted students and regular schools. Consequently, working with soft skills becomes even more important for these individuals. In light of the above, the question addressed in this study is: "How can the use of the STEAM approach, through project-based learning, assist high-ability students in K-12 Education in developing socio-emotional skills?" The general objective of this study is to analyze an investigative and creative practice, using the STEAM approach, for the development of socio-emotional skills with students in the Talento Metrópole Program. To achieve this, the specific objectives are: i) Identify socio-emotional skills that can be explored through the STEAM approach; ii) Develop an investigative and creative project with a group of students in the Talento Metrópole Program; and iii) Map the socio-emotional skills developed by gifted students during the practice. Thus, the methodology of this research will be qualitative and will be carried out within the context of the Talento Metrópole Program, an initiative of the Instituto Metrópole Digital (IMD) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), targeting students in K-12 Education with high abilities/giftedness. Data will be collected through questionnaires, participant observation of program classes, and records of project implementation. As a technical outcome of this Professional Master's study, in addition to the implemented practice, a didactic material will be developed targeting teachers, providing a reference for the use of the STEAM approach in the classroom with high-ability/gifted students. Regarding the results, it is expected to demonstrate possibilities for practices using the STEAM approach that can assist high-ability/gifted students in Basic Education in developing important socio-emotional competencies that will contribute to their holistic education as critical, reflective, and creative citizens.
