SUMMARY:

Chemistry Teaching has its importance for the formation of as citizens. However, despite of its presence in our surroundings, students find it difficult to see Chemistry in their daily lives, especially when the context of teaching is out of their reality, and prioritizes memorization. In the search for another way of thinking the traditional teaching model, the STEAM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) emerges as a possibility of developing practices that place the student in the center of both teaching and learning processes. This study aims to answer the following research question: What are the impacts promoted by the implementation of the STEAM approach in Organic Chemistry Teaching? From this questioning, the following general objective arose: to identify the impacts of the STEAM approach in the Teaching of Organic Chemistry. To reach that, specific objectives were followed: I) to identify the competences and abilities related to the content of Organic Chemistry in the national curriculum (Base Nacional Comum Curricular or BNCC); II) to implement a teaching sequence that will lead the elaboration of a didactic guide for Teaching Chemistry with the STEAM approach; III) to analyze the teaching sequence of Organic Chemistry from the STEAM approach. In order to discuss the theoretical assumptions that support this research, it will be taken into account the aspects related to the STEAM approach, the reflection on the Teaching of Organic Chemistry, the learning difficulties and the relation between the STEAM approach and the BNCC. The present proposal will use a methodology of qualitative nature and its steps will be followed according to the procedures of an action research. The active methodology Project-Based Learning (PBL) will be used to develop the didactic sequence that will be applied in a State School located in the city of Natal. Participants will be students from one 3rd year high school class. As instruments for data collection there will be the logbook, including textual and multimedia registrations, and the portfolio. The educational products of this study will be a didactic sequence of Organic Chemistry for High School based on the STEAM approach, and a didactic guide aiming Chemistry teachers. The results of this research are expected to demonstrate the impacts of using the STEAM approach as an alternative to traditional teaching. It is hoped that students be able to see some proximity between the studied content and reality, and they are also expected to be able to discuss and think in a critical way about social, economic and environmental aspects.
