SUMMARY:

With the great growth and popularization of Information Technology (IT), new educational practices emerged. Among them the distance education modality (EAD). For this modality, the so-called virtual learning environments (AVA) emerged as support for course management. Among them, the Moodle platform can be highlighted, a platform used for the application and organization of activities and interactions in an EAD course. In addition to these tools, the planning of these courses and their teaching-learning strategies also have at their disposal tools for defining and visualizing instructional design in the format of a computer system, such as the Authoring Tool for Instructional Design (ATID). This modality, despite bringing together a series of benefits, still presents a series of issues that have been debated. Among them, the engagement of students enrolled in these courses. The engagement in this teaching modality can be seen as a determining factor to improve the student's overall performance. Furthermore, engagement in this modality can be understood as a construct composed of the so-called engagement dimensions. Among them, some works defend the existence of three dimensions, being them cognitive, social and behavioral. Within AVAs it is possible to associate each of these dimensions with activities and behaviors performed by students. In this way, this research is guided by the question of whether it is possible through better feedback to the student through system notifications and generated from the definition of a course design, to improve their engagement and, consequently, their performance in the course. For this verification, the creation of a software artifact in the format of a module to be built within the ATID tool is proposed. Such an artifact will allow the launch of system notifications to students enrolled in an ATID-integrated Moodle course.
