SUMMARY:

Higher education students have been facing challenges in learning Analytic Geometry, the sub-area of Mathematics that links Algebra and Geometry fields. Within Analytic Geometry, the study of Vectors is introduced as an algebraic resource that serves as an instrument for solving geometric problems, and vice versa. The study of Vector Algebra has strong applicability in several Fields of knowledge, such as Physics, Engineering, Computing, Economics, etc. It is essential that the student is well trained in this regard. Nevertheless, the learning difficulties related to basic Vectors concepts and operations are evident. Disciplines that address this issue in higher education require a high level of abstraction from the student, and usually adopt teaching materials that are poorly contextualized, disfavoring learning approaches that make sense to the student and takes into account their educational needs. This work aims to assist students in the teaching and learning process of Vectors, within Analytic Geometry, through a contextualizing Mathematics approach, using Augmented Reality to support the visualization of three-dimensional geometric components that are more significant to the learner. Therefore, it is proposed the conception, development and evaluation of a mobile application prototype in Augmented Reality that enables the Vectors and Analytic Geometry student to practice a selection of skills related to their educational goals. For the organization and definition of its activities, the research was based on the principles of Design Thinking, seeking an innovative solution centered on the needs of end users. The target audience of the research consists of undergraduate students from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) who are taking, or have already taken, the Vectors and Analytic Geometry course, or equivalents. Several instruments were used to gather information that serves as a basis for the research, such as: direct observation; focus group; data analysis; interview with teacher; online form for students. At the moment, mathematical puzzles are being developed to be inserted in three-dimensional environments, so that students can work on their mathematical skills regarding the vector knowledge while interacting with those environments. The puzzles generated will be applied in undergraduate classes through the experimentation of the prototype by students and teachers involved in this research. The puzzles are expected to contribute to a better mathematical visualization and a more meaningful learning for the students. It is also expected that this work will encourage further research on the same subject-matter and that the generated prototype will be carried forward in favor of a richer learning experience.
