RESUMO:

The current society ispermeated by the digital information and communication Technologies (TDIC), so that students live with various features and tools, which require new ways of being and communicating. Given this scenario, there isn´t escape from addressing the issue, or avoiding the paradigmatic changes caused by educational technologies. It is assumed, therefore, that there is a close relationship between TDIC and distance education, given that this modality develops from and with the TDIC, in addition to its students being immersed in a virtual learning environment, whose tools contribute to formation of digitally literate subjects. The exposed situation prompted us to investigate the students' digital literacy practices in the Distance Education course at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), to delineate the digital literacy practices carried out in the teaching profession discipline, as well as to identify and evaluate tools that provide interaction between the subjects in AVA and that foster collaborative practices. The study focused on the Teaching Profession curriculum component, offered by this course, for the possibility of access and immersion in its virtual learning environment - AVA, since we were acting, at the time, as distance learning. The theoretical framework for this study is anchored on the tripod "Distance Education, Information and Communication Technology and Digital Literacy", with Belloni (2015), Almeida and Valente (2011) and Buzato (2006) as guiding authors of these areas. The research had a qualitative character, using the bibliographical research and the ethnographic case study. The data were collected through questionnaires, activities developed in the component - forums, infographics, monitoring reports issued by Moodle and official documents of the course.Field exploration revealed that students have moderate use and appropriation of TDICs. However, during the research, it was observed that the activities carried out promoted the development of basic skills to acquire digital literacy, such as Internet search and critical evaluation of the content available in this environment. It was verified that the use of active methodological strategies for the training of digital literate subjects is primordial, which can be pointed out as a necessary experience for those who experience the distance modality.
