SUMMARY:

The present study was carried out in a micro-enterprise of clothing making, intending to identify the causes of needle wear in the sewing process, as well. Thus, the improvement proposals will be considered by the company, and will be explored throughout the year in order to obtain even more improvements as future perspectives. The sewing process is one of the most important segments in the clothing industry, being an essential part in the assembly of most textile products through various industrial machines. The industrial sewing machine segment has been constantly developing with technological developments, to improve performance in the production sector of various clothing products. Given the variety of machinery to meet the range of sewing operations existing in the confection, it is necessary specific needles and thicknesses suitable for the pattern of the different fabrics on the market, aiming at the desired quality in the sewing. Therefore, it is extremely important to pay attention to the sewing machine needle, and its replacement is essential to have a quality sewing; however, machine operators only do so when they perceive it to be badly damaged, bent or when it breaks. In the tribological study of materials, that is, of the friction generated during a process, it appears that the physical wear and tear that occur on them harm the material, so it is estimated that needles are no different, where the sewing process must take the needles. to wear, impairing the formation of the sewing stitch, damaging the fabric and the quality of the product, and even the insistence of using them can also cause damage to the machine. The biggest problem for needle wear is because industrial sewing is high speed, causing high temperature, high friction and friction between the parts, thus causing damage to the needle, the sewing thread and the fabric. The sewing thread undergoes repeated abrasion and passes through the eye of the needle, resulting in friction with the needle; on the other hand the friction between the needle and the fabric during its penetration through the fabric layer causes an increase in the temperature of the needle. This hot needle causes damage, causing a loss of productivity and quality. The work described in this dissertation aims to analyze the process and the aspects that cause needle wear, as well as its consequences for the production process and for the industry. Thus, even with the possibility of a small improvement in the process, it projects benefits in terms of costs and performance for the industry. Needle wear is a problem faced by the sewing industries and understanding the causes of wear and applying this knowledge to reduce needle temperature during high sewing speed can bring greater benefits.
