Essential oils (EO) are of great importance to several sectors of the industry due to their wide biological activities such as antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, among others. Although they have excellent properties, EOs are highly dependent on external agents limiting their use. Thus, the incorporation of oils in microemulsified systems (SME) provides the stability and bioavailability that this oil, alone, did not have. In view of the above and aiming at an application on cotton fabric, a microemulsified system with antimicrobial properties was developed, for that essential oil was extracted from the leaves of Eplingiella fruticosa, an abundant plant in the northeast region of Brazil, to be one of the constituents. The essential oil exhibited mostly the components: 1.8 - Cineol (29.15%), followed in greater quantity by β-Caryophyllene (12.57%), cis-calamenene (8.71%) and β-Pinene (4,86%). The formulated SME (SME-AV) has physicochemical properties of pH = 5, small droplet size (19.8 nm) with low polydispersion index, zeta potential = - 0.58 mV and excellent resistance to thermal stress (up to 94°C). These results provide good characteristics for information and potential activity against opportinistic microorganisms, which mainly affect patients with compromised immune systems, which can cause diseases in all organs and tissues of the body. Thus, the use of SME-AV becomes an alternative to combat undesirable microorganisms that cause hospital infections.
