SUMMARY:

The inspection by PIG MFL (Pipeline Inspection Gauge Magnetic Flux Leakage) is one of the most used techniques in the inspection of ducts to detect internal and external thickness losses, caused by the corrosion phenomenon. Although the technique is widespread in the industry, it brings with it a high measurement uncertainty, causing some defects to be oversized or undersized. This work analyzes some parameters intrinsic to the MFL technique, such as: PIG displacement speed, magnetization level and wave amplitude of the MFL signal, using the Box-Behnken statistical method to define the factors that most influence the MFL measurement uncertainty. The study was carried out in loco with 17 samples, using the ultrasound scanning inspection technique to assess the real condition of the metal losses. It was observed that the parameter with the greatest influence on the measurement uncertainty is the wave amplitude. However, the combination of the three parameters mentioned above, provides a better result in determining the measurement uncertainty. A significant factor is that wave amplitude maps different geometries for thickness losses located in the tube body, compared to losses located in the ZTA (Thermally Affected Zone). This can be explained by the modification of the crystalline structure of the material in the ZTA. In this way, pipeline monitoring and maintenance inspections, based on the combination of the three measurement parameters, will be able to prevent the spread of damage and improve the reliability of the entire pipeline and pipeline network.
