SUMMARY:

This thesis addresses the application of thin films of Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) and Titanium Nitride (TiN), applied in multilayers using the technique of magnetron sputering, and thin films of carbon type diamond with embedded silicon (silicon-incorporated diamond- like carbon - DLC-Si), applied in multilayers using the PECVD technique using silane + methane. The applications were carried out on surfaces of SAE 1045 steel substrates, using a third set of samples without coatings as Control Samples. For the provision of wear on the samples, a tribometer, of the cylinder-on-disc type (tribocame), was developed, whose operation is close to that which occurs with some components of the Common Rail injection system (C.R.). The samples were immersed in diesel S-10 B10 and were submitted to a sliding contact under cyclic load for predefined periods. The characterization and mechanics and tribology of the films was carried out through the evaluation of microstructural aspects by electron microscopy, semi-quantitative chemical analysis, uniformity, in addition to methods such as mass loss, roughness and microhardness. The results showed by the evolutionary evaluation of the microscopy images, both coatings responded with greater efficiency in reducing wear compared to uncoated samples. Despite having a high rate of mass loss in the first tests, the MoS2-TiN film obtained the lowest values of roughness at the end of the last test, confirming its tribological potential in reducing friction. For DLC-Si samples, roughness indexes above the rectification standard were recorded. This is related to the composition of the deposition of these films. However, such samples obtained lower rates of mass loss and showed the best behavior in the medium used.
