SUMMARY:

The widespread use of gears in wind energy production applied to wind turbine gearboxes and the considerable number of failures resulting from this equipment, lead mechanical engineering scientific researches to reduce power losses due to wear and friction between the gear teeth. One way to reduce friction and wear is by improving the gears lubrication. This work aims to build and test a tribometer capable to simulate the contact between spur gears in order to promote wear on the test gears. Improvements and increments were made in the preliminary project developed by Silva (2018). The components previously and also in this project designed have been manufactured or purchased. Then, they will go through the assembly and testing phases. The tribometer will be instrumented to monitor the variables: oil temperature, angular velocities of the axes and vibrations in the boxes. The monitoring will be made with the aid of virtual instruments on LabVIEW. In addition, it will have the possibility of automation, being controlled by a frequency inverter with a integrated programmable logic controller (PLC). The tests will be based on the DIN ISO 14635-1: 2000 standard and will consist on the application of 12 loading stages to analyse the lubricants load capacity. The level of wear will be assessed during the tests and, according the failure criterion, an assessment report will be prepared for each tested oil. The evaluation of the oils lubricants will be according to the stop moment of each test. It is intended to compare oils developed at UFRN laboratories with commercial oils widely used in wind turbines gearboxes. The study aims to evaluate the oils applicability developed at UFRN in specific industries applications.
