SUMMARY:

Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the most suitable vascular access for performing hemodialysis treatment. Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the most suitable vascular access for performing hemodialysis treatment. Problems related to its manufacture, new flow conditions and vascular remodeling cause early failures in about 60% of this type of access. The current study seeks to experimentally analyze an AVF model of a specific patient with rigid and flexible walls submitted to pulsatile flow, investigating the flow conditions at certain access points and the deformation suffered by the same, according to the imposed load, relating these results to possible AVF pathophysiological sites. From computational modeling and 3D printing the two types of AVF were manufactured and preliminary results for pressure at certain points showed variation in the behavior of the pulse relating to the two AVFs, higher pressure values were observed in the rigid AVF, however, in the flexible AVF, the highest values of pressure drop between the entrance and exit of the access were observed, data for the deformation have not yet been analyzed effectively, but the adaptation in the experimental workbench for this type of analysis is being elaborated. The values of the peak pressure at the entrance and exit of the rigid AVF were 166.438 mmHg and 155.712 mmHg, respectively, whereas in the flexible AVF the values were 101.558 mmHg and 69.830 mmHg, observing a drop in the average pressure peak of 10.726 mmHg in the rigid model and 31.728 mmHg in the flexible AVF, in addition, a lower pressure value was observed at the system anastomosis in both cases.
