RESUMO:

Cold work tool steels are used in the industry for manufacture of dies, punches, knifes, and for applications in which excellent properties of wear resistance with low cost are required. Thus, the present work aims to compare the wear resistance of AISI D6 tool steel after two heat treatments: conventional quenching and tempering, and quenching and partitioning. Samples with 10 mm of diameter and 28 mm of height were manufactured as specimens. After that, the following heat treatments were performed on the specimens: heating up to 900 oC and the following cooling routes: (1) Oil quenching with double tempering; (2) Quenching and partitioning at 100 °C; (3) Sub-zero quenching and tempering, and (4) Quenching and partitioning at 200 °C. Vickers microhardness tests with loads of 50 and 100 kgf were performed. A MEV equipped of a EBSD detector was used for characterizing the heat treated specimens. The wear tests were performed using a pin-on-disc device with loads of 30 N and speed of 0.6 m/s. In this case, heat treated AISI D6 tool steel pins were used as bodies against AISI 1020 steels discs (underbodies). With this preliminary investigation, it was noted that the AISI D6 tool steel presented different microstructures depending on the heat treatments. The condition of T&P at 200 °C provides the highest wear resistant.
