SUMMARY:

Biosensor is a type of sensor that have gained prominence in recent years due to their advantages over traditional sensing methods, which are expensive and time consuming.
They are composed of two main parts: a recognizer bio-element and a transducer, both can assume different configurations depending on the desired application.
An optical biosensor based on the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) achieves high sensitivity, is label-free and its multi-layer construction allows an increase in the selectivity of the target analyte. They are widely used in various areas such as medicine, environment, food industry and agriculture.
As the choice of layers in SPR-based biosensors and the analysis of the obtained multi-layer configuration is very difficulty and expensive, in this work, we present a simulation tool, developed through mathematical modeling, with an easy-to-use interface, and with several design options for calculating and analyzing reflectance and angle of incidence of these type of devices. The application, developed in Matlab, behaved as expected offering the user the possibility to export data to Excel and becoming an useful alternative for numerical analysis of SPR biosensors and its parameters, such as quality factor, detection accuracy and sensitivity.
Finally, a new hybrid structure is proposed, considering a spectro-angular interrogation in a portable device, aiming to increase precision and versatility.
