SUMMARY:

Planar microwave sensors have demonstrated important functionalities in several applications, such as in the food, industrial and biomedical sectors. Microwave sensors have several advantages related to their low cost and ease of fabrication, in addition to the possibility of integration with other devices. This thesis proposal has as its main objective to develop new planar sensors to characterize, in a non-destructive way, the complex permittivity of solid and liquid dielectric materials. The sensor initially proposed is based on a planar microstrip filter with the insertion of a Complementary Split Ring Resonator (CSRR) in its patch. This element is used for determining the electrical properties of the materials under test (MUT). The sensitivity analysis is determined by varying the permittivity of the MUT. The sensor is analyzed using simulations in the Ansoft HFSS software. A prototype was fabricated and measurements were made on two different samples of dielectric materials that have their values widely known in the literature. The simulation and measurements results are in good agreement. The continuity of this work is discussed and a timetable for its conclusion is presented.
