SUMMARY:

In this work, a new class of optical waveguide, based on light guidance through means with a fractioned refractive index in the propagation direction, is proposed. These types of structure are based on a quasi-periodic sequence of the refractive index that constitutes the signal guidance region. In this context, it could be highlighted the optical fibers modifications that are already widely known, having in evidence the segmentation of its core. This modification allows the creation of various devices, such as lasers, filters and optical sensors. One of the more traditional models of segmentation applied in optical waveguides, is the Bragg Grating, also known as Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG), in this case, the sequencing immersed in the guidance region, follows a periodic pattern. More recently, some models of quasi-periodic sequence have been applied in photonic crystals, especially, considering the transversal section of the waveguide. Here, a new strategy of segmentation, based on quasi-periodic sequencing at the refractive index along the propagation direction is proposed. The idea is to investigate possible fractionations of the core of waveguides, applying quasi-periodic models, as such, the sequences of Fibonacci, Thue-Morse and Oxoacid, with the objective of compare its performance in relation to the waveguides that use the Bragg grating as segmentation strategy. For this study, the software COMSOL will be used for the simulation of the different types of segmentation.
