SUMMARY:

This work was inspired by a problem faced by the National Telecommunications Agency, which is the identification of interference caused by illegal FM radios. Based on this problem, the objective of this work is to present a viable and yet unexplored methodology on how to identify co-channel interference. Interference identification is modeled as a binary hypothesis problem, in which the objective is to test for the presence of harmful interference. The thesis proposal is based on the application of classical sensing algorithms to the interference detection problem and on the proposal of new algorithms based on Machine Learning. The thesis hypothesis is the belief in the possibility of detecting interference, even if it is not audibly noticeable. As a preliminary result, this work presents simulations with synthetic signals in passband using 11 classical methods of spectral sensing, which were adapted to the interference identification problem. The methods have their identification performance compared to show the potential to propose the study of new interference detection algorithms. The thesis’ proof-of-concept methodology is based on computer simulation (synthetic signals) and real signals acquired through a software-defined radio setup using the USRP. Thus, it is possible that, at the end of this work, a device capable of identifying co-channel interference caused by FM radios will be made available, even in low SIR scenarios.
