SUMMARY:

This work presents the analysis and development of a MIMO antenna (multiple-input multiple-output) for applications on smartphones that support the fifth generation of mobile communications systems, called 5G. Among the advantages offered by 5G system, it should be highlighted ultra-fast speeds, low latency, great reliability, great channel capacity, high spectral efficiency and massive connection density. Therefore, MIMO antennas have been extensively studied for applications in this technology, as they can considerably increase the data transmission rate and the channel capacity, since the channel capacity is proportional to the number of antennas used in transmission and reception. In addition, it can also improve the link capability of wireless communication systems through multipath data transmission and reception. The developed MIMO antenna has eight ports, double polarization and high isolation between the eight ports, being designed through a simple technique based on the use of transmission line stubs between the radiant elements. Simulations are performed in the ANSYS HFSS software for numerical characterization. Some prototypes are manufactured on FR-4 substrate for comparison purpose. A good agreement is observed between simulated and measured results, confirming the accuracy of the developed analysis. A key parameter in the performance of MIMO antennas, the envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), is analyzed and presents good results. In addition, the effects caused by the user's hands are investigated.
