SUMMARY:

In the last decades, a fair share of computing devices has moved from the large, stationary setups, to miniaturized embedded computers. From entertainment and communication devices to health and aerospace applications, this technological evolution faces multiple challenges. Energy efficiency is a key requirement in modern digital computers, either large or small. When dealing with embedded devices, it is a limiting factor, due to restrictions in power supply and heat dissipation. Based on the power consumption in silicon devices characteristics, it is usually needed to keep voltages low to increase energy efficiency. The gate delays, and therefore the operating frequency, are tied to the supply voltage, limiting performance at low power states. To account for process, voltage and temperature (PVT) variation and ensure the correctness of operations, manufacturers specify a safe voltage margin, or guardband, trading energy efficiency for reliability. In this work we propose a flexible architecture, using Error Detection and Correction techniques,  especially exploring the inherent redundancy of multicore systems, to eliminate the need for such voltage guardbands in low-power modes. Taking advantage of an established architecture with few additional hardware blocks, we aim to reduce its power consumption with minimal effect on the performance. A literature review and preliminary experiments have shown that there is an opportunity to obtain energy gains, even accounting for error correction overhead, when violating the specified guardband.
