RESUMO:

Over the last decade, breast cancer has emerged as the main form of malignant neoplastic disease in women worldwide with a high mortality rate and being much more malignant compared to other forms of cancer. Early detection of cancer is very important for successful treatment, surgery, and longer survival of patients. Microstrip antennas have served on numerous applications in the field of biomedical engineering. Some of these applications are Microwave Breast Imaging (MBI), for detecting the tumor and obtaining information about the breast tissue; diagnosis of bone-related diseases, such as osteoporosis, through the characterization of the bone tissue; imaging of biological compositions and characterization of tissues for detection of other types of cancer and other diseases; medical implants of antennas for diagnosis and treatment of diseases, being necessary to change the dimensions of the antenna so that while the antenna is inside the body it will operate at the same desired frequency, and it is necessary to use biocompatible materials to avoid damaging the body tissues such as infections; hyperthermia treatments, where microwaves are used to destroy cancer tumors by heating them, being an alternative treatment method or being able to be used in conjunction with radiotherapy and chemotherapy; monitoring of patient well-being. In this regard, the general objective of the work is the study of microstrip antennas in biomedical applications as a way of replacing machines that use x-ray source in the mammography examination and to make the diagnosis of breast cancer occur in a less painful and uncomfortable way, since conventional mammography examination requires compression of the breast.
