RESUMO:

The doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy conversion system
(WECS) currently dominates the wind energy market due to its advantages over other
WECSs. In it, the generator stator is connected directly to the grid, while the rotor is
interfaced to the AC network by means of a back-to-back power converter scheme. Appropriate
control of back-to-back converter scheme allows wind turbines based on the
doubly-fed induction generator to operate in the variable-speed mode, whose benefits
include maximum power extraction, reactive power injection and mechanical stress reduction.
However, the increasing number of WECS has led system operators to develop
specific grid codes concerning its connection to the power grid. In these code requirements,
low-voltage ride through is one of the important and pertinent issues, as well as
to provide reactive power in orther to support the grid restablish the voltage during a sag.
Therefore during grid disturbances such systems must keep some level of controllability.
This thesis investigates the impacts of the control and drive system on the overall performance
of the DFIG-based WECS under MPPT and LVRT perspectives, according to
recent grid codes of Brazil, Canada, USA and Germany. It is proposed a new 4th-order
state-feedback adaptive control strucuture with real-time parameter estimation applied to
current control loops, which consider integrated direct and quadrature components dynamics
together as well as tracking errors. The proposed control scheme estimates the
coefficients matrix and calculates state-feedback gains in real-time. Preliminar simulations
results shows the proposed solution advantages over classical and previous strategies,
in ideal and non-ideal situations. Additionaly, it is investigated the harmonic distortion of
several pulse width modulation (PWM) strategies employed on high power WECS.
