SUMMARY:

Timber, one of the oldest and most traditional building materials in the history of architecture, has lost a lot of space in the industrial culture developed in modernist architecture and in consumer culture that has expanded along with postmodern architecture. It is believed, in general, that the new role of this material as a construction system was associated with the urgency of renewable practices in response to the intensive depletion of Earth’s natural resources, especially at the end of the twentieth century. However, from the perception of different contemporary movements and theories at the service of architecture, it is noted that the interest in the use of timber has also been revived in current trajectories beyond ecological architecture, such as low-tech, eco-tech, high-tech, “more for less” architecture, critical regionalism, tectonics, phenomenology, organicism, and biomimetism. Taking as its basis the period between the 90's and nowadays, this work has as its general objective to study the timber architectural works in the light of contemporary production in different realities, systematizing them according to their narratives within the Architecture Theory, their formal characteristics and their respective socio-technical contexts. The work is divided into two sections: Part I, performed according to the bibliographic research method, will discuss the purposes of timber architecture according to the theories of Contemporary Architecture, raising architectural types for contribute (or revisit) these narratives and seek to understand the role of timber and its ways of use in current production; and part II, which consists of case studies in three distinct socio-technical contexts: the Salgenreute Chapel in Krumbach, Austria, the Chilean Expo 2015 pavilion in Milan, now set in Temuco, Chile, and the Foundation's children's homes Bradesco, in Formoso do Araguaia, Tocantins, Brazil. It is expected to highlight the presence of this material as a good solution to the constructive aspirations and demands of contemporary society, especially in matters related to professional ethics, environmental responsibility, and the potential for technological expression of architecture.
