RESUMO:

This research explores effects exerted by architectural form over movement and encounter patterns in Praia da Pipa, Tibau do Sul-RN, where urban animation, together with privileged natural attributes, render this coastal settlement as a popular destination for national and international visitors.

Pipa grew from a fishing village and developed into a deformed grid of branched ways nested amongst dunes and cliffs. Sited on high ground and well withdrawn from the seaside, Baía dos Golfinhos Avenue, the longest thoroughfare in the village, concentrates a variety of retail and service outlets located on both sides of the street. This area – often intensely animated at evening and night times – shares status as an icon of paradisiacal retreat alongside images of bays and cliffs.

Tendencies of concentration or dispersion concerning the potential of movement underlying the space configuration, are examined in the light of the Space Syntax theory (HILLIER; HANSON, 1984; HILLIER, 1996) for Pipa and surrounding settlements, and then related to architectural attributes (public-private space interface) that may facilitate or hinder encounters within Pipa’s urban perimeter.

The investigation of relations between spatial properties and land use are anchored on the following cartographic bases: the map of Tibau do Sul (2006) produced by the Instituto de Desenvolvimento Sustentável e Meio Ambiente  (IDEMA) within the framework of the program for tourism development in the Northeast (PRODE-TUR/NE), the Master Plan of Tibau do Sul (TIBAU DO SUL, 2008), and satellite images provided by Google (2013). Notwithstanding temporal gaps and data disparity, these sources inform about the period between 2006 and 2016 and were complemented by a photographic survey gathered along  seven fieldwork visits (2016 and 2017) that  recorded the people movement and gathering in a sample of spaces selected according to their degree of topological accessibility.

The results, currently in the process of condensation and synthesis, indicate that Baía dos Golfinhos Avenue is a highly privileged area as regards topological accessibility and private/public space interface, a factor likely to be at the root of its animation, which contrasts with that in development areas at the fringes of the settlement, where topological accessibility, occupation and building attributes outline a logic of automobile movement that little contributes for facilitating random encounter.
