SUMMARY:

The Medical Internship is a final stage of the undergraduate course experienced by students in health services. The daily reality of the profession, inherent in this new stage of training, is considered a source of concern and stressors, which can impact sleep quality and predispose to mental disorders. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the sleep quality and symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress in students of the Medical Internship of the Escola Multicampi de Ciências Médicas do Rio Grande do Norte (EMCM-RN). The invitation for voluntary participation in the research was sent to all students who were attending the medical internship at EMCM-RN in December 2021. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee before starting the data collection stages in which the participants had to sign the Free and Informed Consent Form (ICF) and fill in four electronic forms created in Google Forms: Socioeconomic Questionnaire; Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI); Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). From a sample of 80 students, only 28 responded to the questionnaires. The sample profile showed a mean age of 26.5 years (± 5.3 years), with a predominance of females (54%), single marital status (79%), Catholic (68%), with a family income of two minimum wages (39%), who live with family (32%) or friends (32%); and needing to move to another city and/or state as a result of the medical course (93%). The average score obtained in the PSQI was 7 points (± 2.8 points), with sleep quality considered poor in 68% of the sample. The sleep schedules obtained describe that students sleep an average of 6 hours/night (± 0.64 hours), counted from the time they report going to bed (23.03 hours ± 0.89 hours), from to wake up (5.5 hours ± 0.57 hours) and of the time to fall asleep (21.25 minutes ± 14.38 minutes). A mean score of 10 points (± 4.59 points) on the ESS was obtained, indicating the absence of complaints of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Based on the same questionnaire, it was observed that 50% of the students had absent EDS, 36% had EDS and 14% had severe EDS. In the DASS-21, the general classification was considered normal only for the stress component (64%). More than half of the students (57%) reported symptoms of depression or anxiety, with the moderate classification being more prevalent in both. Thus, the research highlighted that students of the medical internship at EMCM-RN have poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation, associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety. The reduced sample in the study could induce a bias in the answers, therefore, the sample expansion is a step to obtain greater robustness in the results. The study highlights the importance of surveying the mental health condition and sleep pattern of medical internship students as an essential component in the search for coping strategies and harm reduction in favor of professional medical qualification.
