SUMMARY:

Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Palliative Care as a approach promoting the quality of life of patients - and their families - who face diseases that threaten the continuity of life, through the prevention and alleviation of Suffering. The Intensive Care Units (ICU), in turn, are hospital units for the care of critically ill or at-risk patients, with medical assistance and uninterrupted nursing and specialized resources for diagnosis and therapy. It is not uncommon in these units to find patients whose disease course it can no longer be modified invaded by multiple venous accesses, orotracheal tubes, bladder tubes, nasogastric or nasoenteric tubes. It is urgent, then, to provide a good assistance when it is no longer possible to change the outcome of diseases, so that this final stage of life is improved as much as possible. At this point, the implementation of Palliative Care emerges as a possibility to safeguard the end of life, allowing this to happen within its own natural course, reducing suffering physical and psychological aspects of the patient and their families. Objective: Assess the perception of professionals from the multidisciplinary team of the Intensive Care Unit of the Regional Hospital from Seridó Telecila Freitas Fontes about palliative care in the unit and thus contribute for the qualification of health care in ICU care and for the quality of life of patients and their families. Methods: this is an exploratory cross-sectional study. A questionnaire will be applied to characterize the sample and assess perception about palliative care in the ICU of HRS Telecila Freitas Fontes. Answers to questions will be analyzed based on the proposal of the Discourse of the Collective Subject, by pair representativeness, similarly to the study carried out at the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of São Paulo (Cremesp) by Brugugnolli et al.
