RESUMO:

The Unified Health System (UHS) was created in Brazil by the 1988 Federal Constitution and promoted a restructuring in the public health model in the country. The reorganization of the health system also reorganized the practices in Oral Health, focusing on the family, through the Family Health Program (FHP), governed by the principles of universality, decentralization, integral care and community participation. Before the model of oral health care was merely curative and mutilating, with the changes it reaches new heights with actions of promotion, prevention and recovery of the oral health of the population. In this context, it is known that worse socioeconomic conditions lead to less access to public oral health services and consequently worse rates of oral diseases. Epidemiological surveys are used to detect the prevalence of these diseases affecting the oral cavity, and the DMFT is the most relevant index used. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the DMFT index and associated factors, in the neighborhood of João XXIII, in the municipality of Caicó-RN. The study is a study of the prevalence of caries disease by the DMFT index, conducted through an individual questionnaire of socioeconomic identification, behavior related to oral health and clinical evaluation. The sample consisted of 283 individuals. The statistic consisted of descriptive analysis using absolute and relative values, and then a bivariate analysis to verify the magnitude of association between the variables through the chi-square test. In the analysis of DMFT, the mean number of missing teeth (5.60) was higher than that of obturated teeth (4.16) and decayed teeth (1.28). The bivariate analysis showed an association between the individual DMOD dependent variable with higher ages (above 34 years), low level of education (illiterate until complete fundamental) and who needed dental prosthesis.
